Snoring is the result of the relaxation of the uvula and soft palate. These tissues can relax enough to partially block the airway, resulting in irregular airflow and vibrations. And it may lead to a number of bad consequences. It is known to cause sleep deprivation to snorers and those around them, as well as daytime drowsinessirritability, lack of focus and decreased libido.[1] It has also been suggested that it can cause significant psychological and social damage to sufferers.[2] Multiple studies reveal a positive correlation between loud snoring and risk of heart attack (about +34% chance) and stroke (about +67% chance).[3]

Besides, snoring is often associated with a sleep disorder called obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). OSA may cause lots of consequences. For example, the physiologic consequences contain hypoxia, sleep fragmentation, autonomic nervous system dysregulation or hyperoxia. The intermediate results regroup inflammation, pulmonary vasoconstriction, general metabolic dysfunction, oxidation of proteins and lipids or increased adiposity. The clinical repercussions are composed by pulmonary hypertension, accidents, obesity, diabetes, different heart diseases or hypertension.[4]

Based on these facts, more and more people are becoming concerned about their snoring problem, they may see the family doctor or a general practitioner to ask for help. To diagnose the condition, the doctor will review patients’ signs and symptoms and medical history. Depending on the severity of patients’ snoring and other symptoms, doctor may conduct a sleep study.
